How to Calculate Lottery Odds

Updated September 14, 2026

Lottery education is most useful when it makes probability, rules and risk easier to understand—not when it sells number-picking systems or implies a predictable edge in a random draw.

Combinations are the core idea

When a game asks you to choose a fixed quantity of numbers from a larger pool and order does not matter, the number of possible combinations can be calculated with the combinations formula.

Why extra number pools matter

If a lottery adds a separate bonus-ball pool, the total number of jackpot outcomes usually multiplies by the number of valid bonus-ball choices.

Use official rules

Before calculating anything, confirm the current number matrix. A small rule change can materially change the denominator.
